NZ & WSAF Photos (December 2010)
Brillig loved gallivanting around New Zealand back in October, visiting Rotorua, the WETA workshop, Hobbiton...oh yeah, and doing some awesome gigs! The band has now released some happy snaps from NZ and 'serious' pics from the Wellington Folk Festival. They also recently played the Whitmore Square Arts Fair. Although they didn't get any photo evidence of kids dancing to their murder ballads, they SWEAR it happens! A few fun pics are in the Gallery >> and even more are on Brillig's NZ Set on Flickr >> and WSAF Set on Flickr >> Enjoy!

Halloween Photos (November 2010)
Brillig spent their favourite holiday - Halloween of course - playing at a private birthday party for good friend Paisley, who is turning 5. Trying not to scare the kids too much, Brillig dressed up as rock icons 'The Dead [white] Stripes and Slash. Oh goodness. Elizabeth still hasn't let go of the drumsticks... A few fun pics are in the Gallery >> and even more are on Brillig's Flickr >>

Brillig & Soursob Bob Team Up on Track (Aug 2010)
Brillig has co-written a track with SA's folk legend troubadour, Soursob Bob. It's their first songwriting collaboration, and it's a doozy about deer, and death. Catch its live debut at Brillig's show on Saturday 4th September at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. Titled "Most Unlucky of the Lucky Deer", Soursob Bob provided the lyrics as a poem, and Brillig had a grand ole time developing the melody & music & fussing with the arrangement. A tender and surprising tale about karma, and deer hunting, this was a delightful challenge for the band to turn a somewhat tragic theme into an uplifting song. Sure, they'd written their own songs where the main character drowned his children, but deer hunting? That's a whole new thing! You'll hear the results at the gig...

Blog: Gotta love a free accordion (June 2010)
This blog is basically a huge "thank you" to our pal Gary Burrows (who punters may know from SA APRA and The Rustlers). He already has a rep for being one of the nicest guys in the biz, with a heart the size of a 747. And then he'll go and do something like... give you a free accordion....!
Elizabeth is still doing a little happy dance, and though she's not likely to drag *both* around to gigs, she's happy to give the newbie a loving home.

BRILLIG
MEET
PAUL WILLIAMS

Brillig's song on THE
Swan Archives (April 2010)
For fans of Brian de Palma's
cult classic flick, "Phantom of the Paradise",
Swan
Archives is "the" online
mecca. Brillig is pleased as punch to have their cover
of "Phantom's Theme" mentioned
on this seminal site. The song has a special place in
Brillig's heart - the idea to do the cover was inspired
after meeting the song's composer (and true gentleman)
Paul Williams during Song Summit Sydney.
You may know Paul's work from such songs as 'The
Rainbow Connection', 'Rainy Days & Mondays', 'Evergreen'
& many more.
The Swan archives are dedicated
to preserving for posterity the legacy of Swan,
who, as the movie's fans will know, is "the most
successful record producer and entertainment entrepreneur
in history", as played to perfection by Paul.
Brillig's
track appears in the THEMES
page of the archives, where the Principal Archivist
describes it thusly: "Far and away
our favorite cover of a song from the Phantom
soundtrack is Brillig's hauntingly lovely take
on Phantom's Theme. Brillig is an absolutely
genius combo, the best thing to come out of
Australia since Oceanic 815."
Mr
Paul Williams himself also had some very personal and
lovely feedback on the track, and Brillig is still smiling.
The band is completely blown away by both honours, and
is always happy to meet new Phantom fans!!

Video clips from Adelaide Fringe (April 2010)
Brillig has uploaded
a couple of video
clips from their official Adelaide
Fringe Festival show "Til Death
Do Us Part", recorded at the Grace
Emily Hotel, March 2010. The band played a
series of murder ballads amidst a very colourful 'Tim
Burton-esque' cemetery set!
The
clips show that yes, it is indeed possible to fit all
of Brillig's instruments, and a complete cemetery, on
the charmingly petite Grace Emily stage. Many thanks
again to the amazing staff at the Grace
for their ongoing kindness and tolerance of Brillig's
shenanigans. :)
The
show was also the official South Australian
launch of new LP "The Red Coats."
The footage was shot by pal Gordon Andersen,
who did an absolutely awesome job, and you can also
find more clips from the Fringe (thanks to Spoz &
Geoff!) on Brillig's Youtube
channel. Why not become a subscriber while you're there?

Spoz's Rant (April 2010)
Brillig may have had to coax
local legendary blogger Spoz to come out on
his intended "lost weekend", but ...victory!
He seemed suitably scared (again) by Brillig's brand
of murder ballads, and was well impressed by the black
banjo. He also took some smashing video footage
of track "Jack Davey" and
some mighty impressive photos, all linked from
his official blog.
The
last time Spoz ranted about Brillig was back in the
band's electro-pop days, where he bestowed upon them
an all-time fave quote: "If you imagined the
characters from ALICE IN WONDERLAND gatecrashing
the masquarade orgy from STANLEY KUBRICK'S EYE'S
WIDE SHUT on a hardcore ABSINTHE bender,
you'd barely scratch the surface of this band..."
So of course this time, Brillig had to dedicate their
song "Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder"
to him... but Spoz also cottoned on to the gag when
they mentioned the main character dies in the end...
"Yup that's Brillig alright, they really DO
love their gallows humour don't they?"
Read the full blog here (from the March 7th archive),
and strap yourself in for his inimitable ravings on
the SA music scene.

Fringe Festival
photos (April 2010)
Feast your eyes on some photo
evidence of Brillig's Fringe Fest mayhem.
There
are plenty of shots from their official Adelaide
Fringe Festival show "Til Death
Do Us Part", plus some candid pics from
their appearance in the Fringe Parade,
along with special guests of the mock
funeral procession: Jackie, Tony, Gordon, Oliver, Phil,
Jude, Alex, and of course, dear Paisley.
For
those not lucky enough to attend the sold out Steampunk
Ball, you can get a glimpse of the stunning
assembly and dream of a time where Victoriana meets
deep space machinery.
You'll
find all the highlights in the Gallery,
and for ongoing updates, head to Brillig's Flickr
photostream.
