Featuring the Adelaide launch of new LP "The Red Coats"

Murder ballads, sea shanties, tales of lost love… Australia’s own 'gothic folk' act BRILLIG proves an evening of folk’s finest theme, 'death', is enchantingly melancholic, beautifully tragic, and... strangely uplifting...!

Described as “the offspring between The Pogues and Nick Cave” ( - Side Line Magazine, Belgium) and taking their name from Lewis Carroll’s poem 'Jabberwocky', it’s no surprise that 'BRILLIG' bring a certain whimsical charm to their performance and song-writing, despite the (deliciously) dark themes.

After a successful Fringe Festival debut in 2007, 'BRILLIG' return in 2010 with a new sound, style, stage set and show for 'TIL DEATH DO US PART'. Over the Fringe’s first three Sundays, these early evening shows will transport you to an eerie, yet oddly familiar place, long ago and far away, as the band spins tales that are best served with a swig of whiskey – or a large glass of absinthe.

And there is no shortage of instruments to help in this quest… Singer/songwriter Matt Swayne wields a Guild guitar, black-skinned banjo and harmonica, while the band’s second singer/songwriter Elizabeth Reid swaps between a viola, piano accordion, autoharp and ukulele. Bassist Denni Meredith adds sweet grooves, and throw in vocal harmonies and a penchant for strong melody, and the result appeals to all ages and genres.

Known for their love of elaborate stage sets, 'BRILLIG' will transform the beloved Grace Emily Hotel into an enchanted (and colourful) cemetery for their Fringe shows, but fear not – the friendly and inviting surrounds of this legendary live music venue are perfectly suited to the task.

Signed to Germany’s Black Rain label, BRILLIG gained critical acclaim in Europe with the recent release of their debut acoustic album, 'The Red Coats', which showcases 12 tracks of their own brand of folk. A tour to Berlin, Prague and Leipzig in May ’09 earned a host of new fans, and the band is currently planning a return visit for 2011.

To celebrate the debut of "The Red Coats" in Australia, each of the Fringe shows will act as an Adelaide CD launch, with tracks from the LP performed during the show, along with a handful of BRILLIG’S favourite ‘murder/death ballads’ by Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave & more.

So join 'BRILLIG' for a sorrowful but sweet journey to folk music’s new frontier, and remember, “Til Death Do Us Part…
